Update from Brooklyn

Dear Friends,

I want to start by issuing an apology for not updating you all more frequently. Life as a bivocational church planter and father of two small children can be difficult and time consuming at times. Please understand that we love and appreciate each of you and the fact that you are praying for us. I cannot imagine how much more difficult this journey would be without your support. So, please forgive me (Nathan) if it ever seems like you have been forgotten. You are indeed near and dear to my heart.

That being said, God is doing some great things here in our ministry and our family. As always, it's much easier to summarize in bullet points:
Our core team is growing: In that last two months, we have added two couples to our core leadership team. Beyond Kevin and Kristi Cabe who joined us in March, our leadership team now includes: Jon and Bonnie Carr (Atlanta, GA) felt called to plant a church in Brooklyn and have joined our team for a 1-year apprenticeship. Over the next year, I will have the opportunity to train Jon as a church planter, and then when he is ready to plant, Cornerstone Church will function as his sending church and main on-field partner. This is an amazing event for our church, because it means that we will be able to plant a new church even though we are a church plant ourselves! Trey and Caitlin Eitel, after feeling a call to go to seminary decided to attend the NYC extension of SBTS (my alma mater) rather than attending on campus so they could gain experience in church planting and help us support our work. The Eitels come to us from First Baptist Watkinsville, GA, one of our church partners. It's amazing to see how God is bringing people to Brooklyn to serve His church!
Our church is growing in size: We are now averaging 30 people on Sundays with approximately 20 in our weekly small groups. This is amazing, and we give God glory considering that the idea of planting a church in Brooklyn started with just two people and has grown significantly! We were really excited this fall, that due to the fact we have several children as a part of our church, we were able to participate in a local children's parade.
Our church is growing in their love for God and their walk with Christ: Lesley and I are each actively involved in discipling our Cornerstone members. I meet once per week with Jeremy (pictured, above right, holding the banner) to discuss personal evangelism and walking in Christ. He has been a believer for a long time, but craves to follow Christ more deeply, and we are pursuing that together. Lesley has been meeting weekly with two ladies, discussing topics such as prayer and Bible study. We are thankful for the opportunity to lead the people of Cornerstone Church.
Summer is already looking to be great: We are already in the planning stages for spring and summer mission teams. We have several churches interested in sending volunteers, and we look forward to seeing God work during our volunteer time in the summer.
Family Update:
WE HAVE MOVED! In September God opened the door for us to finally have a 2 bedroom! We are so excited and are loving our new place. Nathan and I have a room to ourselves (with 4 walls and a door!), and the kids room is bigger than before. Our living room is HUGE. We hosted 18 adults for dinner the other night and felt very comfortable. I have a full size dishwasher, a new oven, and my own washer and dryer that cost me nothing. The little things in life that make us happy! To the right is a picture of us sitting on our front steps of our new place.
Sophia: Sophia is our smart and independent little woman! She  brings me much joy each and every day, as well as teaching moments for myself. Any mom of a 2 1/2 year old has to learn patience!!!! She is doing an incredible job with potty training. She loves going for walks, shopping, etc. Every morning she asks "Where are we going today?" She LOVES to sing, her favorites are "Nothing but the Blood", "Bless the Lord", and "Stand up for Jesus!"
Caleb: Caleb will be turning 1 next week! He is my sweet little boy! He LOVES his mama.  Started walking at 10 months old and yes he is a climber too! Still has the cutest dimples and loves to show them off. He laughs and smiles all the time. He is determined to do EVERYTHING Sophia does and he is all boy... loves to "attack" Sophia, throw anything and everything and eats like a man! I call him my little monster!
Prayer Requests:
Pray that Nathan would lead our church well. Pray that he would have good time management skills, would dedicate time to preaching and preparation, and would disciple the staff and members of Cornerstone Church as God leads.
Pray for our church to grow in love for Christ. Our people are asking some great questions about faith, and we are seeking to answer those daily. Pray that we would be diligent in our discipleship.
Pray for our summer planning. We have several churches interested, and we want to plan to utilize them well.

On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand

Our congregation will be doing the Indelible Grace arrangement of "On Jordan's Stormy Banks" very soon.

VERSE 1:
On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan's fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

VERSE 2:
All o'er those wide extended plains,
Shines one eternal day;
There God the Son forever reigns,
And scatters night away.

CHORUS:
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound (I am bound)
I am bound for the promised land.

VERSE 3:
No chilling winds nor poisonous breath
Can reach that healthful shore;
Sickness, sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and feared no more.

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 4:
When shall I reach that happy place,
and be forever blessed?
When shall I see my Father's face,
And in His bosom rest?

REPEAT CHORUS

1997 Christopher Miner Music

Propitiation

On the cross, God displays both His love and His wrath; His wrath poured out on sin, His love demonstrated by the provision of His Son. The blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross satisfied the wrath of God against the sin of man. The judgement, punishment, and wrath that sinful man deserved was satisfied in the death of the sinless Son of God. Jesus Christ, the propitiation for our sin.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus." (Romans 3:23-26 KJV)

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (1 John 4:10 KJV)

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV)

Standing on the Promises

Many of us grew up singing the hymn "Standing on the Promises." The minister of music in the church where I grew up (who also happened to be my dad) was an 'every stanza' kind of guy. I remember singing four verses and a refrain. Looking back in the hymnal that we used (the Baptist Hymnal, of course), that's how many verses there were, four. Recently, however, I discovered that there are actually five verses to this hymn. The third stanza was not included in the Baptist Hymnal. Having read it now, I'm a little sad that it wasn't. It says...
Standing on the promises, I now can see perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me; Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free, standing on the promises of God.
"For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us." (2 Corinthians 1:20 KJV, italics mine)

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." (John 8:36 KJV)

Praise the Lord! I think we'll sing it this Sunday!

Adam, Us & the Plan of God (Genesis 1 - 5)

  1. Man was made by God (1:26), in the image of God (1:27), for the purpose of spreading the glory of God in all the earth (1:28).
  2. God gave man the breath of life (2:7), a place to reside (2:8-14), a work to do (2:15), an exception to guard (2:16-17), and a wife to cherish (2:18-25), so that he could live a soul-satisfied, joy-filled, God-honoring life (ch.1 & 2).
  3. Man sat passively by while his wife (family) was under attack (3:1-6a), he fell drastically low when he was faced with his sin (3:6b), he tried horribly wrong to cover his sin when he knew that he'd fallen (3:7), he hid quietly away when confronted with his disobedience (3:8-10), and he blamed, incorrectly so, the reason for his fall (3:11-12), so that every person after him would be born into sin and condemned by their sin (3:17-19 & Romans 5).
  4. God punished for Adam's sin (3:17-19), provided for Adam's forgiveness (3:21), banished from Adam's home (3:23a), gave a continuation to Adam's task (3:23b, 4:1-2a, 4:25 & 5:1-5), in order to maintain His own holiness and to demonstrate His own grace (Romans 5).

YIKES! Which Songs Do I Listen To?

Each choir & band member has received CDs that contain all the music through May 2013. WOW! That's a lot of music! Yes, it is. So you may ask yourself, "What should I listen to?" The quick answer is, "All of it." It will bless you. The more specific answer is, "Try listening to the songs that have been scheduled for the next month." You can find that information on the right side of this page under "Choir & Band Song Schedule." We will eventually sing every song from the collections, God Is So Good, I AM, We Have Our Savior, and WM2012/2013. We will sing the following songs only from the collection Amazed By You; Your Name Is Still Higher, Amazed, More Than Conquerors, I Need Your Mercy, Unfailing Love, and Fly Like An Eagle. Again, the most helpful way to listen, learn and pray, is to focus on the songs for the upcoming month.

Blinded and Single-Minded

In the introduction to his modern day classic, Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster writes of what he calls the "Devotional Masters of the Christian faith,""These 'saints,' as we sometimes call them, knew God in a way that I clearly did not. They experienced Jesus as the defining reality of their lives. They possessed a flaming vision of God that blinded them to all competing loyalties. They experienced life built on the Rock."

Overcome

This weekend (7/22) we'll introduce the song Overcome. The song originated from New Life Church and the Desperation Band. Jeremy Camp has also recorded the song on his project called The Worship Project. You can hear a sample of Camp's version by going here.

Overcome

Seated above
Enthroned in the Father's love
Destined to die
Poured out for all mankind
God's only Son
Perfect and spotless One
He never sinned
But suffered as if He did

All authority, every victory is Yours
All authority, every victory is Yours

(Chorus)
Savior, worthy of honor and glory
Worthy of all our praise
You overcame
Jesus awesome in power forever
Awesome and great is Your name
You overcame

Power in hand
Speaking the Father's plan
You're sending us out
Light in this broken land

All authority, every victory is Yours
All authority, every victory is Yours

(Chorus)

We will overcome
By the blood of the Lamb
And the word of our testimony
Everyone overcome
(X3)

(Chorus)

Humility

"True humility is agreeing with God about who I am, nothing more and nothing less... When I am in agreement with God about who I am, and when I posture my heart humbly before Him, I am free to create and perform and lead and everything in between. It is all an extension and a manifestation of who He has designed me to be." - Audrey Assad

Prayer Time

"Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:12-13 NASB)

"Thus says the Lord who made the earth, the Lord who formed it to establish it, the Lord is His name, 'Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.'" (Jeremiah 33:3 NASB)

"And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them. And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all." (Acts 4:31-33 NASB)

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE MUSIC & WORSHIP MINISTRY TEAM IN THE CHOIR ROOM EACH SUNDAY MORNING AT 8:15 FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SUMMER FOR A TIME OF PRAYER PRIOR TO OUR SERVICES.

Currently Reading

In his new book Spirit Rising, Jim Cymbala writes in the first chapter...

"Examples of the Holy Spirit's work appear often in accounts of the early church. Unfortunately, today many of us have gotten used to doing without the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives and churches. Consider these honest questions:

How many Christians suffer from a spiritual life that is dry and mechanical?

How many serve Jesus, whom they know about from the Bible, but who is not a living reality in their experience?

And do we ever wonder why Holy Spirit interventions are so rare among our congregations?

Could it be that we're missing out on some wonderful blessings planned for our lives and churches because we're not properly acquainted with the person and work of God the Holy Spirit?"

Remembering the 80's

In case you missed it, or have just forgotten how incredible it was, go back and check out the music of Russ Taff. Taff was a member of the group The Imperials before going solo. "Medals" and "Russ Taff" are his second and third solo album. Taff was later a member of the Gaither Vocal Band and can been seen on several Gaither Homecoming Videos. Taff's music, message and mullet were (and are) second to none.

You can check out "Medals" here and "Russ Taff" here.

Recommended Reading (& Other Resources)

Check out this great book by Ray Comfort. Kirk Cameron says, "This book rocked my world! It forever changed my view of the gospel and ignited a passion for the lost." God Has A Wonderful Plan For Your Life (The Myth of the Modern Message) has been both challenging and convicting. You may also want to check out the many other helpful resources available at The Way of the Master.

Recommended Reading (& Podcast)

Recently, our pastor asked the staff to read Tim Keller's book King's Cross. The book is a walk through the Gospel of Mark. Keller is the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. We are about halfway through our discussion of this extraordinary book. It has been a joy to read. See the video below for a brief introduction to books and resources from Tim Keller. As an aside, I also recommend the Redeemer Presbyterian podcast. It is one that I listen to regularly.

Recommended Music

In times past I have recommended music from several sources. One of those resources is Indelible Grace Music. Although not "brand new," the latest release, The Hymn Sing, was recorded live in Nashville, TN. It contains songs from many of their previous albums. As with all of the albums from Indelible Grace, each track is an arrangement of a hymn. The album contains music that is warm and enjoyable, and lyrics that are theologically rich and doctrinally pure, engaging both the heart and mind.

Update from the Tubbs

Dear Friends,
The last few weeks have been great for us at Cornerstone Church! In February, we had the opportunity to visit Alabama and connect with several churches and participate in a missions celebration hosted by the Chilton Baptist Association. It was a great time, and we enjoyed being able to see family and friends while also connecting with some new ministry partners.

Recently, we have also been pleased to see God answering our prayers in tangible ways. For almost 4 years now, we have been praying that God would send some long-term workers to the field. On Thursday, March 1, Kevin and Kristi Cabe from Knoxville, TN moved into their apartment in Bay Ridge. They are serving a two-year appointment with the North American Mission Board under their Missionary Service Corps program. Kevin will be working with us as our music director and developing a strategy to reach teens and singles, while Kristi will be working to lead our women's events and serving with Lesley in our children's ministry. We are so thankful for their help and look forward to serving with them.

On a similar note, we have also been praying for God to provide us some help from someone with some business experience, preferably a retired couple. This has been for a few reasons. One, as a church, there is a business aspect of what we do, and it would be good to have some experienced help (budgets, incorporation, etc.). Two, 20% of Bay Ridge residents are 60 and older. We are blessed by the fact that in late March a  retired gentleman with significant administrative experience with major universities in the US is visiting Bay Ridge to see if he could spend some time working with us. Please pray for this opportunity.

God is good, and it has been refreshing to see His hand upon us recently. We are so excited about the help which God provides and for His guidance in church planting. The church here is growing - we are seeing new faces, and we are seeing individuals growing in their faith. All of this is a result of prayer. Please keep praying for us as we seek to reach a lost and dying community.

As always, we thank you for your prayers and support. Please let us know how we can continue to pray for you as well.

We look forward to hearing from you soon,

The Tubbs Family

Welcome Kevin & Kristi
With just under 9 months of marriage, Kevin & Kristi Cabe packed up their belongings and headed to Bay Ridge in March of 2012. Both sensed the calling of the Lord on their lives to invest into a local community and partnering with a local church for the hopes of leading people to Christ. Kevin has a BA in Christian Studies from North Greenville University and has served in churches in North Carolina and Tennessee as an associate pastor, church planter, worship leader, and student pastor. Kristi has a BA in Religion from the University of Tennessee  and an MDiv in Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Kristi has been active in children ministry, student ministry, and women's ministry. Both are excited about being in Bay Ridge and working with Cornerstone Church.

A Message from the Tubbs

Dear Friends,

I want to share with you all that God is doing here in Brooklyn at Cornerstone Church. It's amazing to think that at this time last year, Cornerstone Church was just an idea, and now, each Sunday, a group of about 20 people meets for worship as Cornerstone Church! The people of Bay Ridge are hungry for a relationship with God, and we are pleased to be able to lead the way in offering them a church family and an opportunity to hear the gospel.

The people that make up Cornerstone Church are passionate about growing closer to Christ and seeing the church grow. I have been excited to watch as over the last few weeks, we have seen the ladies in our fellowship begin a once-a-month coffee fellowship and a bimonthly accountability group. It's so great to see a desire to love Christ and His church!

Also, in the last few months, God has brought several new individuals and couples into our fellowship. The following is an excerpt from an email that I received recently and wanted to share with you in order that you can celebrate our successes with us:

"We love Cornerstone and are so so so happy to have found a church family so welcoming and fun. We love the laid-back atmosphere, the great contemporary worship, and of course, the solid preaching. Thank you so much for all of the hard work you put into making Cornerstone Church everything that it is!"

Please pray for us as we seek to assimilate new visitors into the life of the church, disciple & equip those who are already involved, and reach new people with the gospel.

Thank you so much for your continued prayers. We could not continue in what we do apart from God's grace. Also, please let us know how we can pray for you.

Sincerely,

The Tubbs Family

Once for All

"But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption... Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET. For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, 'THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEART, AND ON THEIR MIND I WILL WRITE THEM,' He then says, 'AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE.' Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin." (Hebrews 9:11-12 & 10:11-18 NAS)

Up Next

Here's the next song we'll learn and sing with the family (beginning on March 4). It's called "Always" and it's by Kristian Stanfill and Jason Ingram. Praise the Lord, our Rock, our Refuge, our Strength, our Help, our Deliverer!

My foes are many, they rise against me
But I will hold my ground
I will not fear the war, I will not fear the storm
My help is on the way, my help is on the way

Oh my God, He will not delay
My refuge and strength always
I will not fear, His promise is true
My God will come through always
Always

Trouble surrounds me, chaos abounding
But my soul will rest in You,
I will not fear the war, I will not fear the storm,
my help is on the way, My help is on the way

I lift my eyes up, my help comes from the Lord
