Problems are eye magnets. Have you ever noticed that? For example, have you ever been driving down the interstate at 70 miles an hour (I am assuming that we're all driving the speed limit) when suddenly everything comes to a stand still? It's like 5:00pm traffic in downtown Atlanta. Why? Well, after 30 minutes of creeping along, you approach an accident that everyone is staring at. You tell yourself not to look, but you can't help it either, you've just GOT to see it. Of course, it's only a battered bumper, but we just have to see for ourselves. Or try this, have you ever been going through a particularly difficult time in life, and it's all you could think about. You try not to worry about the problem, but for some reason it feels like an obsession. You even consider praying about it, but it's always there, right in front of your eyes. This bent to put our eyes on the problem instead of the prize seems to be common to all of us. But there is a solution.

Jehoshaphat was having a major problem. His kingdom was about to be invaded by a massive army and 2 Chronicles says he "was afraid." But it also says that he prayed to the Lord. At the end of that prayer he says, "O our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You." Jehoshaphat knew that having his eyes on the problem wouldn't solve it, but that with his eyes on the Problem Solver, nothing was impossible.

Although not directly connected, it reminds me of another passage in Hebrews 12 that says, "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Cue Music...
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace."

The Pain of Speaking for God

Have you ever been ridiculed for speaking the truth about God? Have you ever encountered persecution for standing up for God? If so, it can be surprising. It can catch us off guard. We can begin to believe that people are eagerly anticipating a word from the Lord, almost as if they jumped out of bed that morning thinking, "Man, I hope someone comes along to instruct and correct me according to the laws and ways of God." This just isn't so. In fact, more times than not, when we say what God says, we stand against the vast majority of the population. Consider this...

"At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa the king of Judah and said to him, 'Because you have relied on the king of Aram and have not relied on the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Aram has escaped out of your hand.'" 2 Chronicles goes on to say, "Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in prison, for he was enraged at him for this." A similar thing happens to the messenger Michaiah a few chapters later when he delivers a word to the king of Israel. Michaiah said, "I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like sheep which have no shepherd; And the Lord said, 'These have no master. Let each of them return to his peace.' Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?'" One would think that the king would respond by saying, "WOW! Thanks, Michaiah! You have warned us of imminent danger. You have stepped in and kept us from heartache, misery and pain. We are so thankful that you have shared this information with us." Not only do the king and his false prophets not thank him, they rail against him. "Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Michaiah on the cheek and said, 'How did the Spirit of the Lord pass from me to speak to you?'" Well, thank you very much. 'Preciate it!

If you find yourself in a similar situation, don't lose heart. Jesus reminds us that, "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (Matthew 5:11 & 12)

Our Help

The prayer of Asa when his army composed of 300,000 from Judah carrying large shields and spears, and 280,000 from Benjamin carrying shields and bows, faced Zerah's army of 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots...
"Then Asa called out to the Lord his God and said, 'Lord, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; so help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.'" (2 Chronicles: 14:11)

That's the Truth

There are those things in one's life that God uses uniquely to help them love Him more. These people and ministries help mark change, transition and growth in the person's life. If I made a list of the top ten in my life that fall into that category, Truth and Roger Breland would be near the top. In God's goodness He allowed me to catch their 40th anniversary tour last night in Memphis. I thank God for the way He has used the ministry of Roger Breland and Truth in my life!

Names, Names and More Names

Have you read 1 Chronicles? Well, the first several chapters are like vegetables for a 7 year old, if you know what I mean. But it did get me thinking. Here are a few things it caused me to ponder.
1. We come from a LONG line of people.
2. God's been at work in the lives of people for a really long time.
3. The world does NOT revolve around me.
4. God uses the good, the bad and the ugly to accomplish His perfect plan.
5. God will finish what He started, no matter what.
6. Many have gone before us, and if the Lord tarries, many will come after us.
7. Invest in people, they'll outlive you.

Is it possible to be with Jesus, but not really? I think so. In Matthew 26 there are a number of people with Jesus, but most of them aren't really with Him.

Verses 69-75...
Peter was with Jesus, but denying Him.

Verses 57-68...
Caiaphas, the scribes and the elders were with Jesus, but revolted by Him.

Verses 47-56...
The large crowd was with Jesus, but on mission against Him.

Verse 56...
The disciples were with Jesus, but running scared from Him.

Verses 36-46...
The disciples were with Jesus, but disengaged from Him.

Verses 26-35...
The disciples were with Jesus, but confused about Him.

Verses 14-25...
Judas was with Him, but betraying Him.

But here's the good one...
In verses 6-13 the Bible says a woman came and anointed the head of Jesus with very costly perfume from an alabaster vial. Although her actions infuriated the disciples, Jesus commended her. And although here name is not mentioned, Jesus said that what she did would be remembered wherever the gospel was proclaimed.

The woman was with Jesus, and worshipped Him.

What about you? Are you with Him?

It Must Just Be Me

When I was reading this morning the following verse made me laugh...

"Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him." (Matthew 24:1)

I've read it before and didn't find anything humorous in it. So I wanted to see if maybe I was just losing my mind (which, if you know me, is quite possible). I got to the office and looked for notes on the subject from several sources I trust. Nope, nothing. So again, it's probably just me, but here's what made me laugh. Jesus was leaving the temple and the disciples came to point out the temple buildings. HELLO, MACFLY!! Can you say, "Captain Obvious"?

Here are several thoughts the laughter prompted...
1. When we're just showing up, Jesus has been there before us.
2. When we're lecturing Jesus on what is and what isn't, He is completely aware and informed.
3. Jesus doesn't need ANYTHING from us, and yet He chooses us to be a part of what He's doing.

A Song from Last Night

Gateway Worship is a ministry of Gateway Church in Texas. The song is from their album entitled Living for You. Faith (or the Lack Thereof)

Matthew has much to say about faith or the lack thereof. So much in fact, that this post would be WAY to long if we addressed them all. However, as I read this week, one of those statements struck me again for its shear sadness. Chapter 13, verse 58 says, "And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief." In light of all the miracles that had taken place in previous chapters, in light of the specific ways Jesus had performed the miracles, in light of the way the Lord commended those who had received healing, it is so sad that in His hometown, Jesus did not perform many miracles. Why? "Because of their unbelief." Now, I am fully aware that there have been abuses by those who say, "You weren't healed because you didn't have enough faith." I'm not talking about that. What I'm talking about is the Lord Himself. This is Jesus! This isn't a "faith healer." This is God! WHAT IN THE WORLD?! Jesus is Who He says He is. He has all authority in heaven and on earth. His power was not diminished between Matthew chapter 9 and Matthew chapter 13, and His power has not diminished from Matthew 13 to this very day. Jesus Christ is the Lord of Glory! He is King of the Universe! He is God and He is able!

The Authority

After Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount...

"When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes." (Matthew 7:28)

Jesus didn't just teach well. The scribes could do that. It wasn't just a good sermon. They had heard plenty of those. The people were amazed because Jesus had authority.

And shortly thereafter...

"And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, and saying, 'Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.' Jesus said to him, 'I will come and heal him.' But the centurion said, 'Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, "Go!" and he goes, and to another, "Come!" and he comes, and to my slave, "Do this!" and he does it.' Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, 'Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' And Jesus said to the centurion, 'Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.' And the servant was healed that very moment." (Matthew 8:5-13)

Jesus affirmed the man because the man recognized completely the authority that Jesus had to heal the servant. Sickness (and everything else) submits to the authority of Jesus Christ.

So how does this affect us?

Following His crucifixion and resurrection...
"And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.'” (Matthew 28:18-20)

We have been commissioned by the authority of Jesus Christ Himself. And how much authority does Jesus have? ALL!

A Prayer of Daniel

Connection to past.
Confession of sin.
Calling for change.
Cry of repentance.
Commitment to the greatness of God's name.

Humiliation and Exaltation

"'Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.' All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, 'Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?' While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, 'O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. Summer Is Over (Well, Almost)

Despite the blazing temperatures still registering on the thermometers, summer is quickly coming to a close. In less than three weeks, school will be back in session, football fever will have taken hold, and the Fall season of the Wynne Choir & Band will be underway. The band will be on their regular schedule this Sunday, August 7, from 4:00pm to 5:30pm in the Worship Center. The Choir & Band Fall Kickoff will take place the following Wednesday, August 10, in the Student Room from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Then the choir will be back on their regular Wednesday rehearsal schedule on August 17. Be in prayer for all that God has in store.

Have you ever heard the statement, "They are too heavenly minded to be any earthly good?" What is generally meant by the statement is that a person does really well when it comes to talking about God, but in the area of doing something about it, not so well. Well, I was wondering if what a person says is matched by what they say, is there ever a point when too much can be said about the Lord and His Kingdom? Can you wear out a conversation about God? Can you think about God too much? Are we less weirded out in a never-ending conversation about football or a movie or a new outfit than we are in one about God? Why is it easier for us to talk about weather, politics, games, and television programs, than it is for us to talk about God? Is it possible that we get uncomfortable with conversations about God, His Word, His Kingdom, and His Church, because there are things that we hold closer to our hearts than Him? Do we go through the motions of loving God when, in fact, we are indifferent to the things that matter to Him?

OK. So, what did you think? Can you believe it? Ever been around people like that? Ever seen God work like that? Have you ever seen anything that even vaguely resembles that?

My first reaction is, "Well, that's the Bible. It's the apostles. Of course, we haven't seen anything like that. That's an entirely different time. It's apples and oranges. It won't ever be that way again." But then I catch myself. WHY NOT?!?! The Holy Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, and filled Peter, Stephen and the other apostles, and came at Pentecost, and caused thousands to be saved, is the EXACT SAME Holy Spirit that has been sent to us. He indwells us and empowers us. He is in the process of conforming us into the image of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He has given us an assignment to do and the power to do it.

Holy Spirit of God, break us, fill us, and use us. May Your Kingdom come. May Your will be done in us and through us. Make us bold and courageous. Help us not shrink in fear. Help us not shirk our responsibility. Change our hearts so that we're not just wandering through life, enjoying things that don't matter while ignoring those that do. We need You to move.

A Different Kind of Music Recommendation

Certain music and musicians have been with me for years. You know what I mean? It seems like no matter where I've been, no matter what's been going on in my life, their songs have brought me great joy, peace and happiness. Other songs, and albums, and artists, although enjoyable and meaningful at the time, have come and gone like the latest fashion. Then there's an entirely different category. These artists just kind of slip into my life. For some, I don't even remember how I became aware of their music. There aren't many that fall into this category. Somehow though, by God's grace toward me, specifically to me, He has occasionally provided an artist that ministers to my heart and soul at just the right moment. In those moments it's really not about music anymore. In those moments the sweet Spirit of God is lifting my eyes toward Him. He is rescuing me all over again. One of those artist is Rita Springer. From the very first time I heard her almost 10 years ago, through the release of her latest album this week, God has used her powerfully to minister His grace to me. Rita, the Lord has sung over me through your ministry. I could never say thank you enough.

242 (Sharing Life Together) and the Summer Schedule

A few weeks ago our pastor shared the vision for 242 groups. This Sunday he'll be sharing even more details; what they are and what they mean for our church. Following the service we will have the incredible opportunity of signing up for the group of our choice. Through the months of June and July we will enjoy the fellowship of these groups, all centered on God's Word. In light of this amazing adventure, our summer schedule will shift slightly during the months of June and July.

Last night was Secret Church. Approximately 50,000 people around the earth met, via simulcast, for an extended time of Bible study and worship. The focus was the crucifixion, salvation and the glory of God. It will take weeks to process all that was discussed, but here's one of last night's take aways...

It Could've Been Me

Today is Good Friday, which means, Christians around the world are thinking about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This morning I've been thinking specifically about some of the "bad guys" in the story of Christ's death; Pilate, Herod, Barabbas, Peter, the religious leaders, the crowd, the Roman soldiers and Judas. As I thought about them, my emotions ranged from anger to pity, from questioning to understanding. You see, it dawned on me that any of these could've been me. Like Pilate, there have been times that I've recognized Jesus, had an opportunity to stand up for Him, and yet lacked the guts to do it. Like Herod, there have been times when I couldn't care less about Christ. Sure, I would've said I did, but my actions showed something entirely different. I've thrown out lip service, all the while knowing it was only a disgusting, purple robe. Like Barabbas, every time I've faced punishment for disobedience and failure in my life, I've looked up to find Jesus stepping in to take my place. Like Peter, the thing I said I would never do is the very thing I've embraced, and the thing that I committed to always do, has ended in an empty promise. Like the religious leaders, I have mocked the very God I claimed to be following. Like the crowd and Roman soldiers, I have blindly, yet with evidence of the truth, participated in the humiliation of the Son of God. And like Judas, I have with one side of my mouth said that Jesus is the Christ, and with the other kissed Him in betrayal. These could've been me. In fact, these all represent me. I am a liar, a deceiver, a cheater, a mocker, a criminal, a chicken, a betrayer, and a skeptic. I am nothing without Jesus Christ Who died in my place.

When we think of "church" in America, we think of going to meet at a building, singing, praying and hearing a message from a pastor or teacher. But in many places in the world, "church" meets in a home, an apartment, even in secret. These small groups of Christ-followers often meet for many hours in study, prayer and fellowship, as it is dangerous to travel to "church" and they want to make the most of their time together.

Secret Church is our "house church," where we meet periodically for an intense time of Bible study - lasting 4-6 hours - and prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters across the globe. This is not for the uncommitted or faint of heart. But if you desire to know God more deeply through His Word, and know His Church more fully around the world, then please join us for Secret Church.

God will use this focused time of study to enrich our knowledge of His Word as we gain understanding of the state of His Church and our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world. Music Recommendation

Today you get two recommendations for the price of one. The first recommendation comes from Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC. Kingdom Come was released in the Fall of 2010. Similar to Passion, Gateway and Hillsong in style and lyrical content, this album is both intimate and celebrative.

We haven't given much press to albums featuring southern gospel or country artists. That is, until today. Sisters is a contemporary southern gospel trio (I don't like labels, but what do you do?) made up of, you guessed it, sisters. All have been, at one time or another, a member of another great trio, The Ruppes. Every album these ladies have recorded, whether with The Ruppes, LordSong, or Sisters, has been outstanding. Their albums are not filled with songs that you would sing in a congregational or corporate setting, but they are songs that help focus your heart and mind on the Lord. They will have you tapping your toe one minute, crying a minute later, and shouting "GLORY!" just a second later. Start with their self-titled debut release (pictured here). It features several new songs, as well as familiar ones, like God of Wonders, Your Grace Still Amazes Me, and an out-of-this-world arrangement of The Lord's Prayer. The album also includes a new arrangement of one of my all time favorite Ruppes tunes, Under His Wings.

I Am Not But I Know I AM

The following is an excerpt ( a really long excerpt) from Louie Giglio's book, I Am Not but I Know I Am...

"God is more massive than our wildest imagination, bigger than the biggest words we have to describe Him. And He's doing good today - sustaining galaxies, holding every star in place, stewarding the seemingly chaotic events of earth to His conclusion within His great story.

God is constant. He blinks and a lifetime comes and goes. To Him one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. All of human history could be written on His fingernail, with plenty of room left over for more.

And God is doing well today, thank you. He has no dilemmas. No quandaries. No counselors. No shortages. No rivals. No fears. No cracks. No worries. He is self-existent, self-contained, self-perpetuated, self-powered, and self-aware. In other words, He's God and He knows it. He is timeless. Ageless. Changeless. Always.

After an eternity of being God, He shows no signs of wear and tear. He has no needs. His accounts are in the black. He's the owner, not to mention Creator, of all of the world's wealth and treasure. He made gold and silver, and the trees we print our paper money on. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and all the hills the cows are standing on. He holds the patent on the skies above - not to mention the earth, the seas and their depths below, the breeze, the colors of the sunset and every flowering thing. They all are His invention. He design. His idea.

God does whatever He wants. His purposes are a sure thing. There's no stopping Him. No containing Him. No refuting Him. No cutting Him off at the pass. No short-circuiting His agenda. God is in control. He sends forth lightning from His storehouse, He breathes out the wind, waters the earth, raises up rulers, directs the course of nations, births life, ordains death, and, in the midst of it all, still has time to be intimately acquainted with the everyday affairs of everyone on the planet.

God knows everything about everything and everyone. His eyes race back and forth across the cosmos faster than we can scan the words on this page. There is not a bird flying through the air or perched on a branch that escapes His field of vision. He could start with Adam and name every man, woman, and child who has ever lived, describing every detail about each one. To Him, pitch darkness and midday are one and the same. Nothing is hidden from Him. He wrestles with no mysteries. He doesn't need to wait for a polygraph machine to decipher the truth. He sees clearly, and comprehends all He sees. He's never known what it is to have a teacher, a role model, an advisor, a therapist, a loan officer, an adjustor, a doctor, or a mother.

God's rule and reign are unrivaled in history and eternity. He sits on an everlasting throne. His Kingdom has no end. Little gods abound, but He alone made the heavens and the earth. God has never feared a power struggle or a hostile takeover. He doesn't have to watch His back. He has no equal. No peer. No competition.

It makes perfect sense that His name should be I AM. And even more sense that my name is I am not.

You and I are tiny. Miniscule. Transient. Microscopic. A momentary and infinitesimal blip on the timeline of the universe. A seemingly undetectable alliance of dust particles held together by the breath of God.

The sum of our days is like a vapor - our accumulated efforts like chaff in the wind. Among us, even the richest of the rich owns nothing. The strongest of the strong can be felled in one faltering heartbeat. We are fleeting mortals. Frail flesh. Little specks. Phantoms.

If this fact makes you just a tad bit uncomfortable, you're not alone. Invariably, when I talk about the vastness of God and the cosmos, someone will say, 'You're making me feel bad myself and making me feel really, really small,' as if that's the worst thing that could happen. But the point is not to make you feel small, rather to help you see and embrace the reality that you are small. Really, really small. But that's not where the story ends.

Though we are transient dust particles in a universe that is expanding faster than the speed of light, the unexplainable mystery of mysteries is that you and I are loved and prized by the God of all creation.

Simply because He wanted to, He fashioned each of us in His own image, creating within us the capacity to know Him. And if that wasn't staggering enough, in spite of our foolishness and rebellious hearts, God has pursued us with relentless passion and patience, fully expressing to us His unfathomable love through the mercy and grace of the cross of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Sure, just a glimpse of His glory instantly resizes us to microscopic proportions. But God is not trying to deflate us with a Milky Way-sized put down that erodes any sense of self and reduces us to a pointless existence. Just the opposite. When we see just how tiny we are, our self-worth and our God-worth can become one and the same as we are stunned with the reality that we have been made in His very likeness and invited to know Him personally.

I am not, but He knows my name.
I am not, but He has pursued me in His love.
I am not, but I have been purchased and redeemed.
I am not, but I have been invited into The Story.
I am not, but I know the Creator of the universe.
I am not, but I know I AM!"

He is one of several guys I listen to on a regular basis. Solid, biblical teaching! New Music Recommendations has been posted on Thursdays, even though new music is almost always released on Tuesdays. Well, I've decided to go with the "new releases" day. Since starting this post a few weeks ago, I've recommended one brand new release as well as some older releases/ministries I thought would be helpful. So, with that said, here is the first Tuesday installment of the more appropriately named Music Recommendation. It comes from a ministry I've recommended previously, Sovereign Grace Music. Friends are worth singing about. They aren't automatic and real ones aren't easy to come by. If you have one or two genuine friends, consider yourself extraordinarily blessed. I'm not talking about Facebook friends, or friends that keep you up-to-date on the latest gossip, but real life friends that reflect Christ and help you love Him more. You smile when you see them, you laugh and cry when you're with them, you pray with them and for them, you're sad when you part ways, and your life is better, even fuller, for having been with them. You actually want to serve God more faithfully because of their example. In the past week I have talked with, or been with, some of these kind of friends. I thank God for their friendship and for all the ways that He has used them to enrich my life and the lives of my family.

New Music Recommendations

This week's recommendation is Indelible Grace. For the past several years I have been encouraged greatly by this ministry. They were one of the first, in a growing number, to take hymn texts, full of rich theology and doctrine, and set them to new music. If you've never heard any of their music, I would recommend starting with the first, which is called Indelible Grace, and working to date. They're all good.

On My Mind

The very first thing that ran through my mind this morning was, "The alarm clock is going off!" The second thing that ran through my mind was, "Man, it's early!!!" Not only was it early, it was EXTRA early because of Daylight Savings Time. After these two less than comforting thoughts, my mind drifted into auto-pilot for several moments, but not much time passed when a totally unrelated thought came to mind. "And if our God is for us, then who can stand against us." I saw Chris Tomlin the night before, so the thought and the song were fresh on my mind. The next thought that came to mind was, "In my place, condemned He stood." The more I thought about it, the more thankful I became. There are so many ways that God is for us, but the most amazing way is Jesus standing in our place, for our punishment. God for us in Christ. Righteousness for condemnation. Glory for shame. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

So Whose Will Was It?

This Sunday our pastor will be preaching through Luke 23:18-25. As I read through the passage again, one of the things that strikes me is who appears to bear the responsibility of Jesus' death in verses 24 & 25. "So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will." Did Pilate, the religious leaders, and the angry mob really determine the end of our Lord? How did Pilate decide, and they demand, and he release, and they ask, and he deliver, and they have this specific will?

Consider Isaiah 53...

"It was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief..."
"the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all."
"Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted."

Praise the Lord for His sovereign grace!

One Way? Really?

So here's the question?
Does "ONE WAY" really mean one way?

And here's the answer.
Based on the reaction of one of Montgomery's Finest, we'll call him Officer Meanface, I would say the answer is most definitely yes. Not only that, I believe I can say categorically, and without hesitation, that when a "ONE WAY" sign is posted, they are to be taken seriously. Dead serious. I will not discuss how much the fine was, but let's just say I didn't eat Taco Bell for the next few weeks. That's serious!

There has recently been much discussion, in certain circles, about the nature of heaven and hell, including who goes there, how one reserves themselves a spot, and why it matters. Although much could be said, and much has been said by others much wiser than I, I would like to share two thoughts regarding the discussion.

First...
Isaiah 53:6 - "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way..."
Each of us, meaning every human to ever live, is going a certain way. Sadly, it's the wrong way. The Bible is clear, we are all traveling the wrong way and there are dire consequences. Proverbs 16:25 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." We will pay eternally for our ill-fated drive down the wrong way. Yes, it's sad. Yes, it sounds harsh. But actually, it's no harsher, in terms of fairness, than the punishment I received from Officer Meanface. I was going the wrong way! It's what I deserved.

Second...
John 14:6 - "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
The only way to God, the ONE WAY that will keep us from the justified punishment of God, the only way for us to experience abundant life now and eternal life later, is through Jesus Christ. Through His sinless life, substitutionary death on the cross and glorious resurrection, Jesus has taken our debt. In Christ, we are right with God. No more Meanface! Colossians 2:13-15 says, "And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him."

How Deep Is Your Love?

Which couple is more married? The husband and wife enjoying the first days of their honeymoon or the 75 year old man who sits steadfastly at the bedside of his terminally ill wife? The answer is neither. They are both equally married. Each has walked down the aisle of a church, exchanged rings, and then committed themselves before God and the assembled congregation to love each other till death parts them. They are both married completely. Now, which couple's love is deeper? I think the argument could easily be made, that while both couples are equally and completely married, there is a depth to the older couple's marriage that has not had time to be developed in the younger couple. The young couple's marriage is filled with new experiences, travel, and a wide range of heightened emotions. Their love is certainly sincere, but it has not yet seen the hard days. It has not endured the inevitable difficulties of marriage. It has not waded through days of monotony and boredom. For the older couple, the new has long since been gone. Their days are filled with the familiar. There is comfort in the sameness. They are simply content to be. Be together.

So it is with our relationship with God. When young, everything is new. Each experience feeds the next. Mountain tops are our lifeblood. Valleys are not easily handled. As we mature, experiences are appreciated, but not expected. And finally, it is simply enough to be His.

Grace Expectations

This past week I was thinking about expectations. They are a necessary part of life. Anyone who has raised children, had a good marriage, maintained a healthy ministry, or operated a business, will tell you that without expectations it all falls apart. Boundaries must be established. There have to be rules. As I was considering the right role of expectations, the question struck me, "How do we balance expectations with grace?" When someone doesn't meet our expectations, what is the appropriate response? How much latitude do we extend? How should we react to unmet expectations? While there are certainly nuances to every situation (i.e. Is it a simple misunderstanding? Is is habitual? Is it sin?) and consequences for every action we take or do not take, what struck me as I thought through it was the example of Jesus when dealing with the failed expectations of a certain woman. There is no question that she had failed to meet expectations, and as a result was rightly placed in a position of condemnation and punishment. But Jesus response, as always, is so perfect, "'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' She said, 'No one, Lord.' And Jesus said, 'Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.'" Now that's a grace expectation!

New Music Recommendations

This week's recommendation comes from Sovereign Grace Music which is part of Sovereign Grace Ministries. The music of Sovereign Grace has encouraged me on two levels. First, and primarily, the texts and themes are theologically rich. The lyrics are both beautiful and profound. They maintain both depth and accessibility. Second, the music is alive. Pleasing to the ear, moving to the soul. Their songs consistently give me something to sing and say to the Lord. I have heard most of their recordings, and I haven't heard a bad one yet. I'll start by recommending their latest album Sons & Daughters, written around the theme of adoption. YES! I've mentioned this recording in a previous post, but it's worth mentioning again in this context. If you already have that one, you might try Come Weary Saints.
